Bangkok Airways business class vs economy: is it worth upgrading for a one-hour flight to Koh Samui?..
Bangkok Airways has built a reputation as one of Asia's more premium regional airlines, offering complimentary meals, lounge access for all passengers at some airports, and a network focused on Thailand's most popular tourist destinations. But is it worth paying extra for business class on one of the airline's shortest and most popular routes?
To find out, I flew business class from Bangkok to Koh Samui and then returned in economy, comparing the two experiences on a flight that lasts just over an hour.
The journey began at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport. Unlike many airlines, Bangkok Airways does not offer a fast-track security lane for domestic business class passengers, although the airport's domestic security process was quick and efficient. One of the key benefits of the premium ticket is access to the airline's Blue Ribbon Lounge.
The Blue Ribbon Lounge at Suvarnabhumi is relatively small but provides a quiet and comfortable environment away from the busy terminal. There is a selection of snacks, hot and cold drinks, and several light meals cooked to order. Comfortable seating and complimentary massage chairs make it a pleasant place to spend time before departure.
Boarding the Airbus A319 revealed one of the most obvious differences between the two cabins. Business class consists of just three rows in a 2-2 layout, accommodating a maximum of 12 passengers. The seats are noticeably larger than those in economy and offer significantly more personal space. During boarding, passengers receive a welcome drink and a hot towel, helping create a more premium atmosphere from the moment they step onboard.
Meal service begins shortly after take-off. While the food itself is broadly similar to what is offered in economy, presentation is where business class stands apart. Meals are served on proper crockery with a tablecloth, creating a more refined dining experience despite the short flight time.
The arrival into Koh Samui is one of the highlights of the journey. The privately owned airport is unlike almost any other in the world, with open-air walkways, tropical landscaping, and architecture that feels more like a resort than a traditional airport terminal.
For the return journey, I flew in economy. Bangkok Airways economy is already more generous than many airlines on comparable domestic routes, with complimentary food and drinks included in the fare. The seats are smaller and legroom is more limited than in business class, but for a flight of around an hour, the difference is less dramatic than it would be on a longer journey.
The final verdict comes down to value. Business class undoubtedly offers a more comfortable and premium experience, particularly thanks to the larger seats, lounge access, priority services, and enhanced meal presentation. However, on a flight this short, the actual onboard experience is brief. If the price difference is modest, the upgrade may be worthwhile. But if the fare premium is significant, many travellers may find that Bangkok Airways' already strong economy product provides the better overall value.
