Inside Cambodia's new gateway: flying AirAsia from Phnom Penh's Techo International Airport to Bangkok..
Cambodia's aviation infrastructure took a major step forward with the opening of the new Techo International Airport near Phnom Penh. Designed to replace the capital's ageing airport and accommodate future growth, the vast new facility immediately ranks among the most impressive airports in Southeast Asia. To experience it firsthand, I took an AirAsia Airbus A320 flight from Phnom Penh to Bangkok Don Mueang Airport.
The journey began with a first look at the airport's striking architecture. Passengers entering the terminal are greeted by an enormous golden Buddha statue that dominates the check-in hall, creating a dramatic first impression. Throughout the building, the design incorporates elegant bamboo-inspired structures and warm golden tones, giving the terminal a distinctive Cambodian identity while maintaining a modern international feel.
Unlike many airports that rely heavily on glass and steel, Techo International Airport manages to feel spacious yet welcoming. The departure area features numerous design touches and artistic elements, including sculptures and displays near the popular Brown Coffee outlet. These details help distinguish the airport from many newer terminals around the world that can often feel generic.
After clearing security and immigration, it was time to head towards the gate. The airport's large size means some gates require a substantial walk, with travelators helping passengers navigate the long corridors. The journey to the gate provided more opportunities to appreciate the scale and cleanliness of the new terminal.
As departure time approached, airport staff prepared the boarding area while passengers gathered nearby. Boarding was handled efficiently, and after a quick scan of boarding passes, passengers made their way through the jet bridge to the waiting aircraft.
Today's flight was operated by an AirAsia Airbus A320, one of the airline's workhorse aircraft across Southeast Asia. Upon boarding, passengers were welcomed by the cabin crew before settling in for the short flight to Thailand.
Soon after departure, the aircraft climbed away from Phnom Penh, providing excellent views of Cambodia's capital below. The sprawling city, rivers, and surrounding countryside quickly disappeared beneath the aircraft as the A320 headed west towards Bangkok.
Although the flight itself is relatively short, the route remains an important connection between two of Southeast Asia's busiest capitals. AirAsia's low-cost model makes the journey affordable while still providing a reliable and efficient travel experience.
Approaching Bangkok, the aircraft descended over the Thai capital before touching down smoothly at Don Mueang International Airport. Once on the ground, passengers were treated to views of the airport's busy apron, with ground vehicles, baggage equipment, and aircraft movements providing a glimpse into the complex operation that keeps one of Asia's busiest airports running.
After taxiing to the arrival gate, the journey concluded with a friendly farewell from the AirAsia cabin crew.
While the flight itself lasted little more than an hour, the highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the opportunity to experience Cambodia's impressive new Techo International Airport. Combining modern facilities, distinctive architecture, and a strong sense of local identity, it offers travellers an impressive introduction to the country and a glimpse of Cambodia's aviation future.
